How do I subtract surface area?

My geometry cl is doing a castle project where we have to find surface area and things like that then we have to build a scale model of it and I'm having trouble subtracting surface area from surface area of a triangle tower, square tower, pentagon tower, and a cylinder tower. Can anyone help me because I'm really lost and my teacher doesn't do exactly the best job of explaining things throughly.
