Chow Chow Temperament?

From what I know about these dogs is that they're highly protective, dominant, aloof, and very wary of strangers. However, I've never owned or met one before. I'd like a personal-experience opinion. Are Chow Chows basically just like this or are they fairly playful and affectionate with their owners as well? (yes I know that all dogs are different and the breed standard is just how the breed generally is) Thank you!
