The fine line between interpretive freedom and arrogance?

I am interested to here your opinions on this topic. how do you react to Glenn Gould playing Beethoven like Bach. Or for that matter, Horowitz playing Everything the way he plays Chopin? Did they push the limits when it came to the performers right to interpret? What do you think Beethoven would say if he heard Gould play his music?
